Ep. 55: Dr. Sue Morter – Enhancing Healing With the Energy Codes for Your Amazing Injury Recovery

You have a healer inside.

I truly believe that each of us knows exactly what we need in order to heal when we get sick or end up with any kind of physical trauma. The problem is that people are either led to believe this is not the case or they overcomplicate things and then they become their own biggest obstacle.

We all have an incredible healing potential and there’s a powerful healer within each of us.

It’s definitely important to get external help such as getting surgery, or a splint when necessary, but the real process of healing starts after that stabilization when you need to look within and connect with the part of you that already knows how to do – how to heal.

That, in a nutshell, is the message of Dr. Sue Morter, the founder of the Morter Institute for BioEnergetics. Coming from a family of energy healers, Sue was destined to carry on this work that blends her clinical background and new discoveries of quantum healing with the ancient knowledge of yogic breathing, meditation, and energy work.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • The different modalities of energy medicine, and how to make the most of them in your healing.
  • Practical exercises that you can do now to slow your mind down and work with your body from top to bottom to make it the healing center it is designed to be.
  • How to ‘work’ with your body during injury and illness for incredible results.
  • Hands-on work: creating a healing energy flow session.

This is also the message of Dr. Sue Morter with whom I did an interview back in 2020 when I invited her to join me on my Mindful Injury Recovery World Summit. The conversation we created helped so many participants and this is the reason I decided to also share it on my podcast. Please enjoy.

02:43
Dr. Maya Novak:
In this interview, I’m joined by Dr. Sue Morter who is an international speaker, best-selling author, and founder of the Morter Institute for BioEnergetics. Dr. Sue has over 30 years of experience and shines a light on the relationship of quantum science and energy medicine, using it to help redirect the flow of energy patterns in the body and allow people to activate their full human potential. Dr. Sue, thank you so much for being here.

03:13
Dr. Sue Morter:
Oh, thank you so much. It’s a great joy. I absolutely love to share this information with people and so I look forward to where we get to go today.

03:23
Dr. Maya Novak:
I’m really excited about this interview. Before we go into more details, could you share a bit about yourself and how and why did you get into energy medicine?

03:39
Dr. Sue Morter:
Well, I came upon it rather honestly, actually. I was born into a family where my father was a pioneer in energy medicine. He was working with energy fields and the electromagnetic biofield and how emotions, thoughts, and beliefs influence that field and how the field influences our physiology and our ability to heal since 1970. So, I was growing up alongside of the advancements in quantum science, and so they were our dinner table conversation. It’s all I ever talked about growing up, so it was my destiny to be on this path. And then as I began to – I graduated and opened my own clinic and started sharing his work with my patients and was getting tremendous results with people. And I also knew there was something more that I was supposed to explore, and I was drawn to meditation. In the midst of meditation, I had some transcendental amazing life-changing experiences almost instantly as soon as I started meditating. So, I wanted to know how to implement that into my life. Like why did this happen? What was going on? So, I kind of turned my life into a living laboratory to figure out how to reproduce these exalt of consciousness that were happening almost as soon as I would close my eyes. And because I knew that other people wanted to meditate, they wanted to learn to meditate, they want to learn to self-heal, and that was possibly a component in their self-healing process. So, I just started exploring everything, sharing things that I was discovering with my patients. They started getting better faster and staying better longer. So, it just – one thing led to another and the next thing I know I’m traveling around the world all the time teaching these concepts to people every week somewhere in the world. So, it’s been an amazing life journey, and I absolutely love to share what’s happening.

05:49
Dr. Maya Novak:
What a wonderful story. So, can you – for those who don’t know this yet, can you explain what energy medicine actually is?

05:58
Dr. Sue Morter:
Sure. So, energy runs through our body and it is the true healing capacity. It’s the innate intelligence that the body possesses to be able to heal itself. When we cut our self, it heals automatically. When we break a bone, it heals automatically. There’s a communication system that is happening to all parts of the body all the time that is greater than the nervous system and faster than the chemical reactions that we study to understand how blood types change and how a wound heals. There’s something that happens even faster than that and it’s the biofield, meaning the body’s energy. And if that energy is flowing, we heal. And if it gets blocked, we stop healing. We develop pain patterns that don’t change. We develop disease conditions that don’t self-remedy as long as that energy is blocked in the certain pattern that it can get blocked in. And so what we’re doing with energy medicine is finding ways to get the energy to move again. And the number one cause for the energies is emotional unresolvedness – unresolved emotion. Even more so than injury, but if injury and emotional states that are unresolved happen at the same time, now we have a real perfect recipe for blocking the energy flow and stopping the body’s ability to heal itself. So, I could go on and on, but I’ll stop there and see where you want to go next!

07:32
Dr. Maya Novak:
No, I love this explanation, and this is why I am so extremely excited about this conversation because it’s true, it’s so important that we look beyond just the physical, beyond that broken bone, or beyond that sprained ankle, or whatever is happening because we are not just the physical body. Even though when we go to the doctor’s office, often we are treated as one. This is it, we’re going to put the cast onto your leg, for example, and then you just wait and hope and finger’s crossed.

08:08
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes, exactly. We’re more than a machine. We’re not mechanical. And science is showing us so many examples of this through the idea of psychosomatic healing where people are told that they’re going to undergo a surgery, and they make an incision in the knee joint and don’t do anything, but then they just sew the knee joint capsule back up again and are told that the surgery went perfect. And now suddenly the individual can walk and actually play basketball with their grandson – I’m thinking of one particular study. And so many other things. We know that learning how to breathe properly moves the energy in the body. We know that meditating, learning to meditate gets the thinking mind out of the way so that this healer within can do its job. And there are so many different avenues into energy medicine that it is thrilling to see. We have sound and vibrational frequencies that start to atone the body into a state where healing can happen. If we think certain thoughts, we either enhance healing or we shut it down. And it’s so important for us to recognize that there’s a world here that we can enter into, that we can take our own health and vitality into our own hands to a much greater degree than we were told as we were growing up, as we were developing. And science is creating new developments all the while. I personally had experiences that changed my life, so I didn’t really care if science could prove it or not. Because I had the experience myself, it didn’t matter who could explain it in what way. I just simply knew that it is possible to heal ourselves. After these transcendental experiences with meditation that I had, I healed scoliosis in my body. I healed migraine headaches that were keeping me from going to the clinic and treating other people one day a week for about eight months right before I decided to go learn how to meditate as an attempt to relieve my stress. I had no idea that it was going to open up my consciousness to an entirely different reality. I just thought I might relieve some stress in the meantime. So, I got both benefits. My stress headaches were completely gone, and my scoliosis started unwinding. In the middle of the night, I would wake up in all kinds of different positions that my body would just take on when my thinking mind was asleep and this internal healer was allowed to start to do its thing. And so my entire spine just started to unwind in a way that sounds fantastical, but to see the shifts on x-ray and to see and feel the experience of the changed structure is enough for me to be inspired to want to turn everyone else onto the capacity to heal.

11:20
Dr. Maya Novak:
I love that you brought up your personal experience because I absolutely wanted to ask you about scoliosis and healing. Usually, the normal process is braces, exercises, and surgery, but you actually did not go down that route. So, do you think that this was the result, more or less, of this meditation experience? Or do you think that there is more to this, what you experienced?

11:51
Dr. Sue Morter:
Well, it’s a beautiful question. People are drawn to meditation because they understand – for a variety of reasons. Some address it for spiritual practice. Some are interested in it for stress relief like I was. Some are interested in – I don’t know, I’m just interested, I don’t know why; I just want to do that. Some people are interested in breathwork, learning to regulate the breath in the body because the energies are moved differently when we breathe differently. And what happened for me was a combination of those two things that led to the healing awakening inside of me. But there was something additional that was starting to burn itself in my own research along the way. I found that when I was emotionally upset I started noticing that I would either get a charge, like a lump in my throat, or a tightness in my chest, or a knot in my stomach. I became hypersensitive and super aware of these nuances that were happening on a neuro-emotional level or a chemical emotional level - the chemistries that were being generated in my body. I could feel myself changing when I was no longer angry or no longer afraid. And so I started putting all that together in a research type of way. And what I found was that in addition to meditating and breathing in certain ways, I needed to slow down and to open up into another possibility of life and who we are and what our role is and how we’re identified if we are attached to the mind or if we’re not. And I found a way to start to enhance the relief of a knot in my stomach or tightness in my chest or a problem in my throat or a clampdown that was happening because of some emotional response to something. I found that if I could direct my attention into that area, and kind of squeeze the area to guide my minds attention into a part of my body that it hadn’t ever been in before, tissues started to relax and unwind and start to heal in a way that they weren’t before. So, I learned that the magnification of my mind on certain energies as they were flowing through my body allowed those energies to be enhanced and magnified because the mind magnifies things. If you have a problem and all you think about is the problem, the problem gets bigger in your life. If you change the focus of your mind, things start to get better. And so whatever you’re paying attention to, it is enhanced in your reality. Quantum science is certainly showing us that we are projecting a movie onto a movie screen and then we’re stepping into that movie, and that’s the life that we’re living. We change the movie, but not by getting mad at the actors in the movie on the movie screen, but really by changing the projector and addressing it from this causal level that is interpreting this information, this energy that’s running through our system. So, that’s a whole other conversation, which I love to have, but what you’re asking about is how do we heal? And what I found was that when we can learn to direct our mind's attention onto the body instead of our being directed onto the story of our life. Or being caught up in the beliefs that we’ve stored or having our energy be thrown onto someone else, that we’re giving all our power away to, someone that upsets us or something that happened 20 years ago that we keep focusing on or an injury that happened a decade ago that has changed our life in some way. When our mind is on those external things, it’s not available to enhance the healer within. And this healer within is the energy that is flowing through our body. So our job is to train our mind to find the real true focus that it is meant to be serving, and to teach it how to do that. What happens is we start healing. So, I’ve worked with tens of thousands of people around the world with these kinds of techniques and they are healing. They are changing their lives. They’re changing their brainwave patterns. They’re changing their immunity. They’re changing their heart coherence. They’re changing their beliefs easily because they’re not coming at it from just the mind's perspective. They’re learning how to use the mind and the body and the breath together in a way that’s much more powerful than any one of those elements are ever on their own. So, what I wrote about in my book, The Energy Coach, is how to do that. How to pull mind and body and breath together so that they can work inside this body in a way that enhances the internal healer that we truly are. We’ve been living in a world completely unaware of the amazing capacity that we have to heal ourselves because our cultures draw us externally into the medicines, the surgeries, the radiations, and the things that are to stop an emergency situation, but they don’t necessarily turn the train around and move you into a self-healing state. And so, at the very least, I would love people to do both approaches if they’re in an emergency type situation. If they’re not in an emergency type situation, and they have the opportunity to explore, to learn, and to figure out how this works for them personally, I highly encourage to do that. Because as a clinician in a clinic for 30 years, I saw people cancel surgery appointments because they were healing under these practices that I’m sharing with you about. They were not having to go through with systems that were set in motion, and coming off of medications, and coming out of pain patterns that they’d been in for 15-20 years. Just because they started to learn how to use their own system actually the way that system was built to be used but has not been tapped because we were distracted onto the movie, and included in that movie is this subconscious message that you don’t have what it takes, you need someone else to heal you. You need this other thing outside of you to fix a problem that you have, and it’s just not that way.

18:14
Dr. Maya Novak:
This is very important because it’s true, it’s like if something happens or I have this injury now, I have to go to the doctor and yes, absolutely, with fractures go to the doctor’s office. Surgeons are amazing to put bodies back together, but it’s not the only thing. I love what you mentioned here. But also, what you talked about here, and I love it, is taking the responsibility for your healing, for your health. So, not giving it away and then that others are going to know what is best for me, but it’s actually also tuning in and knowing that we all possess this power for incredible healing.

19:02
Dr. Sue Morter:
Absolutely, healing on every level of our lives. It doesn’t just have to be physical healing. There are people that are suffering from emotional incompleteness, unresolvedness, things that are packed inside of them that are creating chemistries of emergency mode inside of their body. And there are things that happened 15 years and it’s constantly creating chemistry that’s dragging their system down. And years later, they can be diagnosed with a condition that could have been prevented if they would have just learned how to honor themselves, how to come in and feel the feelings that they have and not stuff them or shove them under the rug. And there are so many ways to approach that. What I have done is teach people how to prioritize that. Somebody might say I have so much stuff, don’t even know where to begin. What do I begin letting go of? How do I forgive? What do I forgive? I’m ready, but I don’t even know where to begin because there’s just so much. So, what we’re doing with The Energy Codes is teaching people your body is going to tell your mind what’s in priority. You have to train your mind to listen to your body. And I give them a system to do that. I give them a communication training of how to learn to speak the language of this internal healer. So, in the book, I call that internal healer the soulful self. It’s the true essential you. The real you is the healer. But when we land here in this life we splat. We kind of – it’s a rough landing. We don’t really know what we’re doing. We don’t know how to process life and be in this world in an effective way. So, we start looking to the outer world to tell us what to do, and we become externally oriented. We start trying to please the other world. We start trying to show up or be accepted by the outer world, or we even become competitive with the outer world – all in an attempt to figure out who we are. And what the ancient sages and rishis of the ancients would say is that that’s the number one problem for humanity. They get caught up in the external world. You have to withdraw your senses. It’s called pratyahara. Bring your senses back onto the self and you will find the answers. They’re right here. You just have to slow down and learn how to speak this language. And so, what I’m doing with The Energy Codes, which is what I figured on my own and then later started reading in texts, that thousands of years ago this information was known but it’s gotten lost along the way. My first response was I wish I would have seen this information 10 years prior because I went through my own self-discovery process, which took me a long time. But my second response to that, to finding this information in the books, was I’m thrilled because I figured it out on my own, which means it’s still alive and well in us today. And it isn’t just some information that the wise ones from thousands of years ago had access to and that now we just put that on a shelf and look at it as this amazing context of information. It is what we’re made of now. So, I was thrilled to discover it on my own. And I was also thrilled to be validated by information that is thousands of years old and considered some of the most important writings in the Vedas and the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras that were written as the very first self-help, self-understanding study of consciousness books for us to revere. So, what I’ve done in The Energy Codes is bring it forward in a user-friendly language that just allows you to be right here, real-time, right now. Learn how to follow this order that the soulful self, the essential self, speaks to the body, and the body speaks to the mind, and the mind doesn’t listen! So, the healer within is nudging the body and the body is saying, hey, I’ve got a stomach ache here, I’ve got a lump in my throat, I’ve got tightness in my chest. And the mind is like I’ve got to get rid of that. I’ve got to get rid of this problem. I need to take something so I don’t feel this discomfort anymore. All the while, that discomfort is trying to say, hey, we need you to come back home. We need you to come back in here and stop paying so much attention out there and disempowering self and giving your healing essence away to some pill or to someone else’s whatever. And land back here and start to claim some of your own true power on an emotional level, on a mental level, on a physical level, on a spiritual level, on a relational level, on a financial level, on a success level, on a manifesting level. It’s all the same thing. It’s all this same person that is either being enhanced or is being depleted because of our externalization and our attachment to the mind, which is filled with limiting beliefs that we’re not enough, that we’ll never be good enough. That we’re too old or we’re not pretty enough or we’re not smart enough, or whatever the mind has latched onto. So, we need to figure out who we really are, and that’s what I’m teaching people in The Energy Codes, is we’re going about it the whole wrong way. We’re attached to the mind and we’re trying to improve the mind's function, while we’re attached to the mind, thinking that’s how we’re going to have a better life. And it does make some improvements, but it will not take us all the way to the true balanced harmonious life that we are interested in living. So, there’s a lot. I just said a lot. Hopefully, that’s okay!

24:35
Dr. Maya Novak:
That’s so beautifully said, Dr. Sue. Now, I would like to ask you something else at the beginning, and it’s absolutely connected to everything you just explained here. You mentioned blockages – energy blockages, and you mentioned emotions and emotions that get trapped into the body. So, what are some actual ways or a number one way in which things get blocked, and how do we then create that flow in the body so that healing can happen with ease?

25:15
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes, beautiful. When you were asking that question I looked over here, I teach a class online and I have these little posters that I could show you an image of one of the images that I share in some of my online courses that might help our viewers understand what I’m talking about. Will that work if grab one of the pictures?

25:34
Dr. Maya Novak:
Please, yes.

25:39
Dr. Sue Morter:
Okay. Can you see this okay?

25:40
Dr. Maya Novak:
Yes.

25:40
Dr. Sue Morter:
Can you see there’s energy flow down through the body and it hits the earth and rises back up through the body, comes out the top of the crown, and comes around the outside of the body and keeps recycling and recycling, and it’s constantly being replenished and it’s constantly hitting the earth. It’s constantly rising backup and creating this toroid field flow right here that we’re witnessing. Now, as that energy rises up through the body, that’s how we integrate it. So, it’s pure healing energy or spirit energy, if you will, that drops down through the body, hits the earth, and rises back up. And the degree to which we can allow it to rise back up without interfering with it, it will allow for healing to happen in our body. But here’s what happens. We have areas that have interrupted flow, lack of circuitry, blockages if you will or gaps in the flow. And so we flow around those areas and that creates a wobble in our system, and that wobble creates a distortion in the energy field. Instead of it being perfect, harmonious, and symmetrical, it starts to take on all these distorted shapes. Now, you can see how someone might have health conditions if their energy isn’t running in this fluid way because it’s accentuating certain areas of our body, and leaving behind other areas of our body. So, certain organs and glands are going to get more energy bombarding them, and the other organs, glands, and cells are going to get left out of the mix. And in addition to that, there’s a whole chakra system in here that represents levels of consciousness, ways of thinking, aspects of our wholeness that are not getting tapped and utilized properly because of this wobbling distortion of the energy flow in our body. So, we have a tendency to self-doubt or self-judge. Or we have a tendency to shut down our hearts or to protect ourselves. We have a tendency to not speak our truth or to not believe in ourselves, or to not feel grounded or that we own the right to present in the world any way we choose –all because of how the energy flowing. So, to answer your question, what do we do about that? How do we change it? What I’m teaching people to do is to close these gaps and to build circuitry through them so that we don’t have to go around them. It’s like building a road through a hill instead of going around the hill. It’s that kind of construction project that happens inside our own nervous system by using the electromagnetic energy flow, and our mind, and our breath, and our body at the same time. Here’s what I mean. We can learn to breathe up and down through a central channel. We can learn to anchor ourselves in the body so that that picks up power, and then we are seated in the driver’s seat in our body in such a way that we have the ability and the power to go through those blockages instead of having to go around them. So, it’s a matter of learning how to bring our mind and our body, and our breath together to do that. I could take us through a little exercise to allow people to start to feel some of this if you would like to do that?

29:11
Dr. Maya Novak:
Please, that would be amazing. yes.

29:14
Dr. Sue Morter:
Okay, all right. So first, let’s just work with this central channel breathing. Let me see if I have an image here. Okay, I do. So, we’ll be able to work with this in a second. Now, just imagine that there’s this channel that runs down through the center of your body from above your head down through the center of the brain, through the center of your throat, through the center of your chest, through the center of your belly, through the center of the low abdomen, right down through the tip of your spine, and goes into the earth. And that’s that channel that we are describing right here, right down through the middle. So, let’s take a breath. Just make it up. Just imagine that you’re breathing in from the top of your head. You’re taking a breath in, breathing right through the center of your brain, the center of your throat, the center of your chest, and into your belly. And then exhale from your belly down through the tip of your spine and into the earth. And then inhale from the earth up into your belly, up into your heart, up into your chest, up into your throat, and exhale right out through the center of your brain and out the top of your head. And then inhale down through the top of your head again, right down through the center of your brain, the center of your throat, your chest, your heart, into your belly. Draw it low into the body. The lower you can breathe in your body, the more healing you will activate. And exhale down into the earth. And now, inhale back up into the belly, and exhale up through the throat, the center of the brain, and out the top of the head. That is a central channel breath. Just by doing that people often will start to feel more relaxed, more present, a shift in their energy that feels more calm or more gathered inside their core. And by doing that, we begin to organize the energy flow of energy medicine. Now, I’m going to teach you a couple of things that you can do to really enhance that. You see here, there are four anchor points. There’s one here at the tip of the spine, one here at the heart level, one in the throat level, and one in the center of the brain. Right here in these areas. The first one we’re going to work with is this one right because it is so powerful. It can change so much for someone. It’s called mula bandha, it means root lock. It means lock yourself in your body instead of being able to flip here into your head. We live in our heads, and we have to learn how to live in our whole body instead of just living in our heads because the head and the mind have only certain vibrational frequencies, only certain tools. And the body is equipped with so many other vibrational radio stations, other frequencies, most of which are designed to access wisdom and personal power, and love and your ability to manifest and create change in your life, and your ability to vision your true dreams, your true path. And have a true identity of who you actually are. So, there’s a whole lot of benefit of living in the body, not just in the head, and so we want to learn how to get in the body. This mula bandha is a way to begin. By contracting all the muscles around this area, we start to enhance the mind's attention there. Which enhances the tiniest particles that quantum science studying called photons, that have an influence on electrons and on atoms and then on molecules and ultimately on the sensory nervous system, and the brain can then pick up on a version of ourselves that is more rooted and grounded and solid in this body and in this life. That’s what we want. We want the brain to register that.

33:22
Dr. Maya Novak:
Yes, so here we are actually squeezing the muscles of the pelvic floor?

33:28
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes, I’m about to teach us how to that.

33:32
Dr. Maya Novak:
We'll continue in just a moment. I wanted to quickly jump in for two things. First, thank you for tuning in. And second, I’m sure you have at least one friend, colleague, or family member who would very much appreciate this episode. So share it with them and help us spread the word. Now let’s continue…

33:54
Dr. Sue Morter:
So, I’m just giving people an understanding of why would I learn how to squeeze the muscles in the base of my pelvic floor? What’s that about? There are lots of benefits to it, but I really want you to understand is that energy escapes. When we think in our heads, we live up here instead of dropping all that down into the body and fully living here in this world as the master of our own life. And so, the way to begin mastering our own life is to get out of your head, get into your heart, but get lower than your heart and get into your power and get into your wisdom. Those two areas live below your heart. So, we have to tether ourselves even deeper than just our heart space. Otherwise, we can become a doormat, we can be loving and kind all the time, but we don’t have the wisdom or the personal power to discern if this situation really warrants your loving presence in it right now. Or, if there’s something else that you could be delivering that might be kind of a tough love or taking a stand for yourself and having the wherewithal to do that. Most of which contributes to healing instantly if we start to take a stand for who we are, and our value and the fact that we matter and that we’re in charge of our lives. So, here’s how we do it. We contract this like if you were going to the bathroom and you had to stop the stream very immediately, you would have to contract certain muscles to do that, to make it stop. So, contract those muscles right now, and that is basically what you want to be working with. It’s kind of like a Kegel exercise if people are familiar with that, which is an exercise of contracting inside the uterus and inside this pelvic bowl for the purposes of keeping all those tissues alive, suspended, healthy, and vital. It also is going to anchor your energy in your body instead of letting it drift up here and up and out and onto something else or someone else and giving all of our power away. So, it’s a way of anchoring and that’s what we want. It’s called mula bandha, which means root look. So, you contract these muscles. Now, the next thing that we’re going to do is combine that with the central channel. And the very first thing that people are going to experience is this confusion about contracting these muscles and then taking a belly breath, because I’m going to encourage you to breathe in your belly and not the upper lobes of your chest. Because when you breathe in the upper lobes of your chest, you enhance fight or flight not healing. When you breathe low in your belly below the navel - when you inhale your belly gets big. So, let’s all take an inhale where the belly gets big, and then an exhale where the belly comes back to the spine, and then an inhale where the belly gets big, and an exhale where the belly comes back to the spine. You can see my shoulders aren’t moving. If I breathe incorrectly, I would inhale and exhale and inhale – and that’s not what we’re saying. It’s the opposite. We want to breathe in the belly and exhale, and breathe in the belly and exhale. So, this is what we’re doing, and we’re contracting mula bandha. Now we’re contracting the muscles at the base of the pelvic bowl, and we’re taking a belly breath. People will write to me and they’ll say how can I contract those muscles and breathe against them? Or they’ll send these emails or they’re asking in my live courses and at the events, they’ll raise their hand at an online teaching, and say yeah, you can’t do both. I say, au contraire, you can do both and I want you to learn to do both because if you learn to do both you’re really anchoring that energy in the base of the body. And the subconscious needs to feel us in the base of the body if it’s ever going to relax. Until it relaxes, what epigenetics is teaching us is that the little cells in your body are getting messages of incompletion. Like nobody’s here, I need to start looking around to see if I’m safe, to see what I need to do, which leads to the cells in your body creating chemicals of fear or of fight or flight or uncertainty or unawareness and it triggers the nervous system to stay in this fight or flight. And the most significant part about that is every moment that you’re in fight or flight, you’re not in healing. You’re not in a healing mode. So, we have to flip that over and allow ourselves to stay in a healing mode. It’s going to enhance the healing mode if we can drop down into the body this way. So, we want that pressure against the inhale pushing out, and the contraction of those muscles pulling in. We want that resistance right there. So, let’s contract mula bandha. Let’s contract the muscles at the base of the pelvic bowl as if you were going to the bathroom and you had to stop that stream, and now take a belly breath at the same time. So, there’s a little light pressure against it, against the mula bandha. In the breathing in, it’s pushing against it. That’s okay. That’s what we want. You want to feel that resistance. It’s perfect. It’s exactly what we’re looking for. So, by contracting that and breathing in the belly, what’s going to happen is we’re going to have this sense of self. Once you drop into the belly, you can relax the mula bandha, you don’t have to keep contracting it. It actually will just serve to let you find that area. These anchor points are designed to help you learn how to find yourself in that central channel. Here’s another one. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and drop them down. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and just pull them down. Now, squeeze that mula bandha again, and lift up. When you lift it up and you pull your shoulder blades down, there’s an area right in your belly that is now primed for you to be able to access your wisdom and your personal power. Take a belly breath right now with those two things contracted. Shoulder blades together and down, mula bandha contracted and kind of lifted up, and what happens right there is your belly starts to be coupled up in such a fashion that the energies are able to coalesce. They’re able to begin to activate this area of your system. Now, if you exhale out the top of your head and inhale right into your belly, right there with mula bandha and exhale then down into the earth, and then inhale up from the earth into your belly, and then exhale up and out the top of your head. When you start coupling these little practices together, it is phenomenal what it will do to change your state of being. If you’re driving down the road and you’re upset, and you’re thinking about something at work or at home, and then you just squeeze mula bandha and start breathing in your belly, in 10 seconds you will not be able to get as upset about that situation as you were before you remembered to mula bandha and belly breathe. So, in 10 seconds you can interrupt your body’s tendency to start creating chemistries that are going to throw you into fight or flight versus allowing you to stay in a healing mode. I know it sounds like a lot. Inside my book, there is a link that you can go to and watch all kinds of videos. There are all kinds of ways that someone can approach learning how to do this very simply and very easily. It’s just a matter of learning these new ideas about using our body to be a center for healing.

41:45
Dr. Maya Novak:
This is amazing, and I can tell that it’s a bit challenging, especially when you’re doing this the first time. Squeezing the muscles but then also breathing into the belly.

41:58
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes.

41:58
Dr. Maya Novak:
So, it’s definitely challenging, but it’s also a great practice what you describe here, and also focusing on the now. So, you don’t have to time to think about the future or the past or whatever is happening. You are present in this moment, where actually healing is also happening right now – not in the future and not in the past.

42:22
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes. And we’re using the body, not just the mind. You can use the mind to heal by not worrying about the past or the future, not fretting about the past or worrying about the future. But you will enhance it a thousand fold if you bring yourself into your body at the same time and develop body consciousness at the same time because the body slows the mind down and the body operates on alpha frequency, and the mind gets way up here in these other frequencies that are so much faster, into beta, etc. And so your true healer operates on a frequency like this one, okay. Your mind is running a thousand times faster than that. We have to learn to slow the mind down so that we can get beyond that and experience ourselves as a more expanded version of who we are, and a creator of our lives. So, by breathing in the belly, you start to slow the mind down. By breathing in the central channel, you slow the mind down even more. And now this energy can run here without being interrupted by all those worrisome thoughts or those self-judging thoughts or those judgmental thoughts that hook into other people that stop the whole healing process altogether. So, yes, it brings us into the now moment and brings us into the body in the now moment, which is even more helpful for the body to heal.

43:51
Dr. Maya Novak:
Great explanation, and Dr. Sue, thank you so much for sharing this exercise, this really powerful exercise. I am absolutely positive that is already changing the feelings and how the bodies of so many listeners are reacting. Now, can this exercise also help, for example, with pain and dissolving pain or not experiencing that much pain?

44:17
Dr. Sue Morter:
The exercises that are associated with The Energy Codes will absolutely start to shift pain patterns. So, someone, if they have – let’s say they have hip pain. You can just ask the simple question where in my body do I need to build more circuits like this? Where do I need to build more circuits so that this can move into a healing pattern? And even though you have hip pain, you might feel a knot in your stomach. If you squeeze that knot in your stomach and start breathing up and down through this central channel, it would free up the energy that is leading to the blocked hip pain. There are also other pain patterns specific ways of working with the breath that I offer in some of the DVDs that are on my website and things like that. But yes, the answer to your question is yes, there are absolutely ways that we can use breathing patterns to address specific pain patterns in the body. Whether those pain patterns are in the central location of the body or out into shoulders, and elbows, and wrists, and knees, and hips and ankles, etc., and including headaches and those types of pain patterns, absolutely. Of course, that’s what got me into all of it, to begin with, was resolving my own migraines, so.

45:40
Dr. Maya Novak:
Fabulous. Oh, this is very, very helpful. So, we are back because last time the internet was acting up a bit. You guided us through a beautiful exercise and now we are continuing today. My question that I wanted to continue with was what would you say to someone who is losing hope about their healing? Because there are people who are very much benefiting from what you already shared here, but I know that perhaps there are also people who just don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. So, what would you say to someone like that?

46:19
Dr. Sue Morter:
So, a beautiful question, and let me say that healing and a few other mental and emotional dispositions go together. So, sometimes if we have not had healing happen and it’s been quite some time, we can get frustrated. We can start to question ourselves, we can start to wonder what it’s all about, is it even worth it, why me, what’s wrong with me that I can’t heal when other people have had similar injuries or circumstances and they seem to be doing better. And the mind movie starts to take place filling the blanks with all kinds of story, that actually the story alone can keep us from healing. So, let’s say an injury occurred and it’s been years - three years, at about the one year mark, we might have started having some of those feelings or even six months. And so at the beginning of having those types of feelings, we might have shut down the healing capacity of our body because of the emotional upset for not healing. So, we might have been slowly healing, not aware of the healing that was taking place, got frustrated and then the frustration shut down the rest of our capacity to heal. The next two years go by and the body isn’t even trying to heal. In those circumstances, we have to teach the body that we’re done being frustrated, we’re ready to begin again. We’re willing for it to be from this point on to start anew and start the healing process. So, in order to do that, patience is one of the most amazing things that we can cultivate and might seem so far away from how we feel because we’re so frustrated or afraid, that patience seems impossible for me to even find. But I want to encourage you to explore what patience feels like. To imagine what patience would feel like if it were present. One time, someone asked me a question that I did not know the answer to and it upset me so much because the question was what would your life be like if you could have it be any way that you chose? And I had never considered that. I was just doing what I thought I was supposed to do. Grow up, be a doctor, treat patients, do my thing, run up and down the hallway treating patient after patient all day long. And then I was on the phone with this gentleman and he asked me this question, and I was just stymied. I said I don’t know. I’m just doing what I think I’m supposed to do, almost like all I could do. And he said, the most liberating question, he said back to me what would you say if you did know? And in that moment, I had to use my imagination, and I gave myself permission to use my imagination, and out of my mouth came, oh, well, I’d be teaching wellness retreats at beautiful beachfront destinations all around the world, that’s what I’d be doing, and I kind of laughed. He said, write that down. And I said, oh right. And he said, no, seriously, write it down. So, I wrote it down and I closed the book – when the conversation was over I closed the book and I stuck it back in my drawer and I went back to treating patients for the rest of the day. A couple of years later we were moving our offices. I was cleaning out my desk. I opened the draw. I pulled out the book – I don’t know – what is this book? And I opened it and it happened to happen to that page. I sat down because I was leaving the next day to teach my very first wellness and meditation retreat in beautiful Cancun, Mexico for five days. I sat down because I didn’t realize the power of us just allowing our imagination to have a viable role in the transformation of our lives. Whether it’s about changing your purpose on the planet or healing an injury or anything in between if you could imagine what it would be like if you did feel patience, your subconscious doesn’t know the difference between you claiming it, declaring it, commanding it, or just imagining it. It gets the same impulse, and the subconscious will begin manifesting what you have commanded because that’s what it’s built to do and it doesn’t know how to do anything other than that. So, there are many reasons that we aren’t healing if we’re not healing, and all of the practices that I am teaching people are to encourage and engage healing again when it’s not happening. The Energy Codes book and the practices in it are completely stocked full of ways to get your body back into a healing mode. But what I know is that if we do not allow ourselves to have the vibrational experience at the cellular level of a healing environment, healing will never start to take place again in your body. It just can’t. It won’t. It’s not a vibrational match. By you imagining what it would be like if you were already healed, what it would be like if you were completely patient, even if healing was going to take three more years, you’d be okay with that. What would that feel like if you were okay with it, if you were that present and that caring? Because those three years are going to go by anyway, will you have been contributing to the healing or will you have been subconsciously sabotaging it just through your frustrations. Chances are it won’t take three years, as long as we start to align enough of these practices at the same time. Lastly, I want to say to your question many times people have tried to change what they eat or to change how they rest, or to change their exercise, or to change maybe their physical therapy, or to change their nutrition – I’m not sure if said that – or to change their attitude, or maybe they’ve tried breathwork or maybe not. Maybe they’ve tried energy medicine techniques or maybe not. But my question to you, is have you tried them all at the same time? Because sometimes the coupling up of some of those different modalities at the same moment in your life, the same days and weeks together, will have a different effect than if you had tried any one of them as an isolated effort. So, keep that in mind. Take a look at have I aligned myself with what I eat, drink, breathe, and think about, and how I exercise and how I rest, and my ability to self-love with patience and enthusiasm and optimism. Have I allowed all of those things to be present in my life at the same time? I think that would be a very valuable thing to address.

53:30
Dr. Maya Novak:
This is amazing advice because people sometimes really get caught in that, well, yes, I tried that and it didn’t work. So, what you are saying here is but have you tried everything at once. So, it’s not just I tried that and that doesn’t work for me.

53:50
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes.

53:50
Dr. Maya Novak:
It’s actually bringing everything together, not just by parts - how we are a lot of the times treated at the doctor’s office, it’s just that ankle, it’s just that knee, it’s just that back.

54:03
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes.

54:03
Dr. Maya Novak:
So, it’s everything together.

54:05
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes, it’s about holism. Many times patients have come into me and said I’ve tried this, I’ve tried this, but I could hear that there was some kind of common denominator that was never present. That they weren’t the one that was saying I’m having some of this, and some of this, and some of this, here right now from me. Instead, it was I’m going to go over here, and then I’m going to go over here, and then I’m going to go over here. And that kind of scattered dispersed efforts can be the reason that it’s just not picking up enough momentum to have a change, to open up this trap door that exists in our brain between our conscious and our subconscious that allows healing to happen when the trap door is open. That healing shuts down when the trap door slams shut from overwhelm and not enough momentum to get it open again is one of the number one causes, that I’ve found, that people weren’t healing.

55:02
Dr. Maya Novak:
This is amazing. I have goosebumps. Thank you so much for sharing this.

55:07
Dr. Sue Morter:
Yes.

55:07
Dr. Maya Novak:
You covered a lot here, and I think that it might already have been answered in this answer, but I’m going to ask you anyway. What is your number one advice that you would give someone? Like if you could choose only one thing, what you say to do?

55:24
Dr. Sue Morter:
For healing?

55:25
Dr. Maya Novak:
Yes.

55:26
Dr. Sue Morter:
Learn to come home to yourself. Come on to the self. Come back into your heart and into your belly, and breathe in your body, and know that you are made as the healer. And the only reason healing hasn’t been happening is that you’ve been living up in your head, rightfully so, trying to figure out what am I going to do, what happened to my life, what’s going to happen now if this doesn’t turn out the way that it used to be or at least some semblance of it. And all of that thinking is the opposite vibration of healing. There are two different realities. The way to get them connected back together again is to come home to the self. So, similarly to saying that I need to take some of this, and have some of this, and have some of this, all right here for me at the same time, it’s similar to that. It’s like have faith and trust in a felt sensation in your body. You have to feel yourself in the body in order for your body to heal because you are the healer, but if you’re not in your body, your body won’t heal. You are the healer, and if you’re living in your head, your body can’t heal. So, you have to learn how to live in your body so that you as the healer can have your way with the body. The real you is the healer. The thinking mind, the protective personality, the false self is not the healer. It’s the worrier and that’s not the one that’s going to get the job done. It feels like surrender. It feels like allowing. It feels way too soft to think that it could possibly be the answer to my problems, but the answer to our problems is softness, and availability, and vulnerability, and pliability, and flexibility, and loving patience. That’s how healing happens. It happens in a very womb type of environment that we kind of create for ourselves no matter what our circumstances are.

57:29
Dr. Maya Novak:
Beautiful advice. I love it. Dr. Sue, I have one last question that I ask every single speaker. It’s a bit of an out of the box question, and that is imagine that you are being injured right now, and the recovery is going to take you a while, and you know that it’s not going to be easy every time. But now you have a chance to choose one of two gifts or one of two options. Number one is that you go through this recovery process and do everything that you can to heal in the best possible way, and at the end, you’re going to be gifted with the gift that you are not going to be injured ever again in your life. Option number two is that you back in time and prevent this accident, prevent this injury, but then you are also taking your chances. So, my question here is what would you choose, and why?

58:25
Dr. Sue Morter:
Oh, hands down, I would work through it and I would awaken on the other side – even whether I would be injured again in the future, and this is why. I know that every circumstance that we have in life is here for one reason, and one reason only. It is here to awaken us, to stir us, to challenge us, to quicken us into a realization that we are more than we think we are. And that we are bigger than we think we are, and that there is nothing bigger than us. If we are injured and we are taken out of the game for a little while, it is so that we will sit and evaluate and reflect and reach inside of ourselves and find a deeper version of ourselves than we even had access to before this particular set of circumstances came along in our lives. And so, I will know more of who I am because of having gone through that than I ever would have known had I never gone through it. Now, not necessarily that I never would have known it but I certainly know it because I did go through it. I’m not saying that we have to suffer in order to evolve, but I am saying if there is suffering, let there be evolution and then it won’t be suffering. It will be an active engagement and an awakening adventure. And that’s what I turn every circumstance in my life that unexpected or seemingly unwanted at the onset. I turn it all into that and it ends up serving me so much. And therefore even if I’m going to be injured again down the road, I will also know going into it, that some really good stuff came from the last time around, so I’m not going to be so hard on myself and the situation this time around. I’m going to just lean in immediately and start looking for the gifts.

01:00:18
Dr. Maya Novak:
Beautiful. It’s a journey. Life is a beautiful journey and evolution, and like you said, the reason why are here – to explore, to evolve. Dr. Sue, where can people find more about you and your work?

01:00:32
Dr. Sue Morter:
