On the 31st of October 2012, my world was turned upside down when – I broke and dislocated my right talus bone during a rock-climbing accident.

My girlfriends drove me to the closest medical center. And, as I waited for the X-ray results, I still hoped that it would be nothing but a bad sprain. That a few days of rest would fix it. That everything would be okay in a couple of weeks’ time.

BUT just a few minutes later, the news came in… I’d fractured my ankle and would have to be transferred to the nearest hospital as a matter of urgency.

By the time I got there, I was tired, scared, and I was in so much pain that I begged the doctors to put me to sleep as they adjusted my ankle to 90 degrees and put a temporary cast on. Over the next 4 days – while lying in a hospital bed waiting for the doctors to decide on what to do next, I heard each and every one of the following predictions:

  • “You will only regain 60% of the flexibility your uninjured ankle had.

As the cast was removed and I got the green light for physiotherapy, I thought my ankle would be back to normal in weeks…
